Cairn Hill mine revival to create 60 Jobs in Coober Pedy

Posted: 5th Dec

Cu-River Mining’s new mining and processing operation at Cairn Hill near Coober Pedy in South Australia is set to create 60 jobs in the region.

The re-launched mine will focus on extracting high-grade magnetite iron ore as well as copper from the site, 55km south of Coober Pedy. It will also create 20 additional jobs during construction.

Operations at Cairn Hill were shut down in 2014 following a drop in iron ore prices, with Cu-River later acquiring it from IMX Resources.

The new operation is being built with the help of a nearly $400,000 grant through the South Australian Government’s Regional Development Fund (RDF).

The grant will support the establishment of its associated infrastructure including the processing plant, road upgrades for heavy vehicle traffic, bores, water lines, and electrical supply.

Cu-River Mining service manager Ning Liu said it would address unemployment in the area.

“Economic development is critical for the future of Coober Pedy – our mining operation will assist in addressing challenges such as declining population and unemployment in the community,” he said.

“We aim to employ locally where possible and are committed to providing local Indigenous people with long term sustainable employment opportunities.”
